Retinal Laceration and Decollement

What are the Reasons Behind the Retinal Lacerations or Holes?

Retina is in contact with the vitreus gel which covers the interior side of the eye. In a healthy eye the vitreus gel would be homogenous, tight. It supports the retina and pushs it to the exterior tissues of the eye like choroid and sclera. The viscose consistency of vitreus gel can be distorted due to certain resons. Diseases like high myopia, eye trauma, intraocular inflammation catalyze the dilution of vitreus gel. The dilution of the vitreus gel causes it to loose its supportive characteristic. Then, retina starts to detach from the layer it is attached. During the course of detachment, in certain cases, the layer pulls the retina and causes lacerations. The infiltration of the vitreus which has become liquified, causes retinal decollement.

Why the Retinal Decollement is and Urgent and Dangerous Issue ?

Retinal decollement is a disease which may result in complete blindness. The laceration and detachment of the retina from the layer it is attached will distrupt its nutrition and thus cause the death of cells. The advancement of retinal decollement to the macula causes the loss of central vision. Even if the retina is re - fixed to its proper place, the loss of time will make it impossible to regenerate the death cells. In such a case, even in the most successful operation, the recovery of the old visual strenght is impossible.

The Cases Where Treatment Needed in Retinal Degeneration Events;

• Existence of retinal decollement in the other eye,

• The existence of retinal decollement in the family history

• Concurrence of other diseases that has a risk of retinal decollement

• The existence of laceration in retinal dilution zone

• If the eye surgery is planned

• Working in a profession that has a high risk of eye or head trauma.
