GENERAL QUESTIONS

GENERAL QUESTIONS
What are the problems that may occur after the excimer laser operation?

Some of the problems of laser operation are listed below. Yet, the frequency of these problems' occurence is very low and laser operations are one of the safest and most successful eye operations.

  • Temporary anxiety
  • Temporary blurred vision or ephemeral visual fluctuations.
  • Need of reading lens after the age of 40.
  • ( -1.00; +1.00) more or less correction. This situation can be recovered by laser.
  • Glares and aureoles
  • Night vision defects especially in high (more than 10) miyopia.
  • Very rare irregular astigmatism
  • Difficulties in using contact lenses
  • Scarring in cornea especially in the PRK operation for miyopias higher then 10 degree.
  • Same level of visual strenght of the vision with glasses

Could you give some information on excimer laser?

Excimer laser is used for the correction of refractive defects and the ee surface (cornea) defects. Myopia, hypermetropy and astigmatizm can be permenantly corrected. Before the treatment, a detailed eye examination is needed in terms of assessing the appropriateness of your eye to the laser. There are two main implementation methods of excimer laser: PRK and LASIK. LASIK is a newer method whose outcome is better then the  PRK method. Both techniques can be implemented as from the ages of 18 - 20. In hypermetropy cases the laser operation can be implemented as from the ages of 15 - 16.

What are the reasons of glaucoma?

A transparent eye liquid is secreted into the eye and this liquid is then absorbed out of the eye ball. This liquid is not related to the lacrima. Imagine that the eye liquid is the water in a tank. When the outlet of the tank is obstructed, the water accumulates in the tank and thus the inner pressure of the tank increases. When the outflow area of the eye is obstructed, the inner pressure increases and this damages the optic nerve.

What does the Amblyopia mean?

Amblyopia is the visual impairement of the eye which has not developed a normal vision in childhood. Usually occurs in one eye. The amblyopia is a common defect and approximately its frequence in the population is approximately 2 - 3 percent. The ideal period for the treatment of amblyopia is the infantile period or the first years of the life.

What are the reasons of Amblyopia?

The normal functioning of the eyes or any situation deteriorating the visual development can cause amblyopia. In most of the cases the situation that causes the amblyopia is hereditary. A family that gives positive medical history interms of amblyopia or strabismus must have their children examined in early period. There are three main reasons for amblyopia. These are:

  • Strabismus: It is the most common reason for amblyopia. The crossed eye does not transmit the vision to the brain and the child only uses the eye that can see better.
  • Refractive defect difference between the eyes: Refractive defects are the eye defects that can be corrected by using glasses. In an eye which cannot focus the vision the amblyopia will develop. No matter how healthy it seems to be, such an eye is amblyopic. This is the most difficult form of the amblyopia for diagnosis and requires a carefull measurement of the vision.
  • The blurriness of eye tissues which shall be transparent in normal: An eye disease like cataract may cause amblyopia. Each gravest form of the amblyopia.

How can the visual loss be avoided?

The treatment of the amblyopia is related to following factors:

  • The degree of amblyopia.
  • The age of the children when the treatment commenced.

The visual strenght of the child increases if the problem can be diagnosed and then treated early. In certain cases the partial treatment may continue until the age of 9. The amplyopia usually does not relapses after this age. If the amblyopia is diagnosed after the infantile period, that is after the ages of 9 or 10, the tratment may not be successful. The treatment of strabismic and refractive amplyopia can be more successfull than the treatment of environmental blurriness - related amblyopia in later ages.

What is Cataract?

Cataract is the opacification of the lens which is normally transparent. Can be thought as the fogging of the eye. There are numerous false ideas about the cataract. The cataract:

  • Is not a film in front of the eye
  • Does not develop as a result of excessive use of the eyes;
  • Is not a type of cancer
  • Cannot be transmitted from one eye to the other;
  • Is not a permenant blindness reason.

What are the reasons of cataract?

The most common type of the cataract is related to the aging of the eye. The other reasons of cataract are:

  • Family history
  • Medical problems like diabetes
  • Eye injuries
  • Medications like cortisone
  • Long time exposure to the sunlight without any protection;
  • Prior eye surgeries

If I undergo an excimer laser operation, can I undergo a cataract operation in the future?

Sure you can. Laser operations do not conflict with any future operations like cataract, etc.

What is Intralase (Non surgical) Lasik?

Intralase, is a stabile refractive laser system which produces healthy results and which gains more importance in the laser applications. Thanks to this advanced technology the first and the most important step of the laser applications (also the step which has the highest margin of error) obtains a computarized method which causes the least possible damage to the tissues. In classical method this first step was implemented by the means of a surgical blade. This blade is now replaced by a laser that operates in micron level sensitivity. Therefore the possiblity of the error which can be seen in all types of surgical operations is minimized.

Thanks to the sensitivity provided by the Intralase FS laser technology, you can SAFELY  apply for refractive laser treatment. This new method significantly reduces the risk of complication. The high level of its sensitivity which was not possible to obtain from the former methods, makes the Intralase system the safest surgical method of today. Comparative clinical studies have proven that the Intralase provides the best vision that can be anticipated.
