What is Strabismbus?
Strabismus is a vision condition where both eyes cannot align simultaneously and can not move in parelel to eachother. When an eye is directed to the object, the other one can turn inwards, outwards, upwards and downwards. This event is called as strabismus.
Deviate Patterns
Inward Turning (Esotropia)
Outward Turning (Exotropia)
Downwards Turning (Hypotropia)
Upwards Turning (Hypertropia)
Various reasons like depressed nose root, face assymetry, eye lid anomalies may cause delusion of strabismus while there is no actual strabismus. This situation is called as pseudo - strabismus.
What are the Reasons of Strabismus?
• Can be hereditary ,
• Not to use glasses despite the actual need,
• Abnormalities of muscles that drive the eye,
• Strabismus can develop as a result of neurologic or congenital problems (situations like Down Syndrome or cerebral palsy).
The Eye Findings of Strabismus
• Deviation in one of the eyes (most typical finding),
• A strabismic child may incline his / her head to a side so as to use both eyes together,
• Sensitivity to the light ,
• Closing one eye while reading,
• Double vision, head ache and prostration may occur.
The Treatment of Strabismus
The aim of the strabismus treatment is to increase the visual acuity; to correct the abnormal head position (if exists) and double vision; to provide free eye movement and to dissolve cosmetic complaints.
• Especially refractive defect must be corrected
• Strabismic amblyopia must be corrected (if exists)
• Eye exercises may be practiced.
• Surgical methods
Strabismic Amblyopia
Is divided into two main sub - groups as functional and organic ambliyopia.
The Reasons of Amblyopia
• Strabismus: The daviated eye's visual strenght gradually reduces since it is not used.
• Need of Glasses: Lens treatment shall start in early period.
• Situations like congenital cataract or eye lid lowerness that obstructs the vision.
Traitment of Strabismus
• Correction of refraction defect may sometimes be enough itself for the treatment of strabismus.
• Closure treatment is the most effective method. The earlier closure of the eye would produce higher levels of success in the treatment of strabismus. It is based on the principle of closing the healthy eye and forcing the faulty eye to exercise. Closure is a treatment method which is effective until the age of 9.
